Builder Licence (Residential & Commercial)
Required for anyone undertaking building work valued above a state-specific threshold. Covers low-rise, medium-rise, and open builder categories depending on project scope and value.
State Building Authority (e.g. NSW Fair Trading, VBA Victoria, QBCC Queensland)
Processing: 6–12 weeks
Trade Contractor Licence
Covers carpentry, electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, air conditioning, and refrigeration trades. Each trade has specific qualification and supervised experience requirements before a licence is issued.
State Electrical/Plumbing Regulator (e.g. Energy Safe Victoria, NSW Department of Customer Service)
Processing: 4–8 weeks
Owner-Builder Permit
For property owners who want to manage their own building project. Requires completion of an owner-builder education course and understanding of OH&S obligations.
State Building Authority
Processing: 2–4 weeks
Demolition Licence
For contractors undertaking demolition work. Classified by structure height and complexity. Requires proof of experience, insurance, and site management plans.

Specialist Contractor Registration
Covers specific trades like waterproofing, fire protection, structural landscaping, and kitchen/bathroom renovation where an endorsed contractor licence is required above a certain project value.

Why Construction Licensing is complicated
Each state has different licence classes, scopes of work, and experience requirements — a builder licensed in Queensland cannot automatically work in New South Wales.
Evidence requirements can be extensive: financial records, project portfolios, professional references, insurance documents, and detailed work history may all need to be compiled.
Mutual recognition between states exists but still requires a formal application process, and the criteria are not always straightforward.
