How to get a QBCC licence: A Step-by-Step Guide

Pick your class, pick your type, gather your evidence, apply. Sounds easy?

Here's the process and where tradies get stuck.

Step 1: Work out your licence class. The class is the kind of work you'll do. The QBCC manages over 160 licence classes, so start with your actual scope of work.

Step 2: Choose your licence type. Your type follows your role: contractor, nominee supervisor, site supervisor or occupational. Want to run your own business and contract directly? That's a contractor licence.

Step 3: Check you can meet the requirements. Eligibility can involve technical skills, a managerial qualification for certain licences, experience, minimum financial requirements for contractor-type licences, a fit and proper person test, and PI insurance for some classes. Everyone also needs permission to work in Queensland, photo ID and evidence of their business structure.

Step 4: Gather your evidence. Typical items are:

• Apprenticeship papers, RTO qualifications or an RPL certificate

• The managerial unit (BSBESB402) where required

• Referee reports or experience records

• Your financial documents for the minimum financial requirements

• A passport-style photo and ID

Step 5: Lodge and respond. Once lodged, the QBCC may ask for further information. Slow replies are one of the biggest causes of delays.
