QBCC Waterproofing Licence: What You Need to Know
What the waterproofing class covers, who else can waterproof, and what you need to apply.
Yes, waterproofing has its own licence class. The QBCC waterproofing class covers applying, installing and repairing waterproofing, including surface preparation, and applying or installing materials or systems that prevent moisture penetration.
Other licences can cover it too.
Some trades can waterproof within their own scope:
Wall and floor tiling covers waterproofing for wall and floor tiling Queensland Building and Construction Commission
Plastering and drywall covers waterproofing and damp-proofing for plastering drywall
So a tiler generally doesn't need a separate waterproofing licence for tiling-related work, but a dedicated waterproofer working across other surfaces does.
What you need for a contractor licence. Expect to show:
A technical qualification (or RPL or an approved equivalent)
The managerial unit BSBESB402 Queensland Building and Construction Commission
Financial capacity under the minimum financial requirements
The general requirements: fit and proper, right to work, photo ID and business structure
Check your scope first.
If your work goes beyond the class scope and beyond incidental work, you may need additional licences. A common mistake is assuming waterproofing on a roof, pool or structural surface sits inside a trade class that doesn't cover it.
